Nominator's project description
| Prof. Stark has conducted pathbraking research on labor migration and nonmarket transfers. His scholarly work on migration has been a creative achievement that has consistently redefined and persistently pushed forward the research frontier. This research has demonstrated that there is more to labor migration than a response to wage differentials; the family rather than the individual has been placed at the heart of migration economics; and migration has been shown to be conducive to the alleviation at origin of constraints such as risk and credit, and a catalyst in the formation of human capital. Oded Stark's work undertakes an innovative exploration of the economics of intrafamilial and intergenerational transfers and exchanges, and of the economics of giving. This research challenges received wisdom, providing in its stead original and fresh material such as new motives for, and new responses to, giving. Oded Stark will study migration dynamics, viewing migration as a process rather than as an event; the evolution and implications of altruism; transfers between generations, especially bequest behavior and the provision of attention and care to parents; and the acquisiton of human capital. |
